Questions to Ask Your Carrier Before Having Your Car Shipped

Are you moving across the country or to another one altogether? Consider hiring a shipping service to transport your vehicle for you! If you’re considering hiring one, feel free to use these three questions to help you make a decision.

How Much Does It Cost?

Check and compare the rates between your local firms.Their servicesare priced based on a few different things. For example, if you own a luxury sedan, you might want to take advantage of the company’s enclosed van. It’s a bit more expensive, but it’ll be safer.

Vehicle size and weight also affect therates. Moving a hatchback will be cheaper than moving a minivanbecause it’ll take up less space in thecarrier truck. The distance between the pickup location andthe destination also counts; shipping your car to another country will cost more than shipping it to a neighboring state.

What Are Their Options?

There are several ways to transport vehicles to other locations. Ask your agent to explain each optionso you can select the right one. Some possibilities are:

  • Multi-Carrier – Pick this one if you’re on a tight budget. A huge trailer will transport several cars, so the fee isn’t as high.
  • Enclosed Carrier – This option is ideal if you own a classic or luxury vehicle. An enclosed truck will keep it safe from dust, rocks, and other debris, as well as shielded from the weather.
  • Open Trailer – This is the most common option. It’s similar to the enclosed carrier, but the bed of the truck is open and exposed to the elements.

What Documents Do They Need?

Find out which papers you need to hire them. They’re important to secure your car but especially so when it comes to crossing borders. The most common requirements are proof of ownership and insurance documents. Apart from additional paperwork for the contract, you may also be asked to provide copies of your ID and your registration.

How Long Will It Take?

Having your car ferried to a nearby state may take only a few days. You’ll have to wait a few weeks, though, if you’re expecting an overseas or a coast-to-coast transport. Different car shipping companieshave varying delivery times. Multi-carriers may take longer than enclosed vans because of the multiple pickup and drop-off locations.

Ask your agent these questions before you agree to hire the car shipping services provided by their company. Once everything is settled, prepare your vehicle for the transport. Remember to remove all personal items, and make sure that both the interior and exterior are clean. Take photos of it from multiple angles, too, so you can thoroughly inspect it upon delivery.
